A: Night guards are generally advisable to patients who have a night grinding habit. Mostly the patient does not have any complain as it is an unintentional habit. The patient might get symptoms of headache and pain in jaw in the morning or their room partners may complain of grinding sounds at night. This is usually a stress related and the patient continuous grinding and clinching habit.
Q: Will the night guard prevent my grinding habit?
A: Yes, the night guard acts as a barrier over the teeth which prevents the aggressive grinding of the teeth and distributes the forces acting on the teeth. It not only protects but also acts a habit breaking appliance to prevent the grinding habit in a patient.
Q: How do I use the night guard?
A: The night guard can be worn on any part of the day but as it hinders daily activities during the day time and is initially uncomfortable so it is advisable to wear it at night while sleeping.
Q: How should I take care of my mouth guard?
A: When the night guard is not in use then it should be kept in a cool, dry place i.e. a clean box can be used. After every use the night guard should be cleaned with cold water and use toothpaste and a brush to thoroughly clean the guard and dry it properly and keep it in a case to prevent any bacterial growth. The case in which the night guard is placed should also be cleaned properly to prevent any contamination from the case.
